From September 1st to 4th, Gran Canaria hosted the world’s best longboards at the competition Festival international Longboard Oleaje.
They found themselves to tame the waves in front of El Altillo beach, on the Moya coast, located right in the center of the Spanish island’s north, in the challenge that elects the best longboarder overall.
Gran Canaria welcomed more than 50 longboard surfers coming from all over the world in the best possible way: sunny days and great waves. The Festival Longboard Oleaje, in addition to the competition, was an opportunity to get together, have fun and celebrate surfing.
João Dantas, our longobarder surfer from WSL Longboard Tour took part in the competition of Festival Longboard Oleaje and we supported him this time as well. He achieved an incredible result by placing fourth in the category male Open. Winning the title, however, was his brother António Dantas.

João at the Festival International de Longboard Oleaje you earned 4th place. While your brother Antonio won the title. Congratulations! What is it like to compete with someone from your family? Had you competed in the same event before?
Thank you! It’s not the first time we compete against each other, it happened a lot of times this year already and we always have a lot of fun! I feel really proud to see him succeed and surfing the way he does!”.

How did you find the waves of El Altillo? Had you been surfing in Gran Canaria before? “I had a lot of fun in Gran Canaria. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming! It has beautiful landscapes and surf spots and the water is amazing! I will return for sure!”.
What did you enjoy most about the Festival? There were also many side events, including the beach cleanup, right? “I think the people made the festival. The organization put a lot of effort for everything to run well and everyone to have fun, surfers and public! The beach clean up was one of the many things to do and it’s good to see surfing organizations taking action warning people to take care of what we all love and we all need”.
